An Asheville Weekend

leave a comment »

I spent Labor Day with my girlfriend in Asheville, NC. We drove a near-200-mile stretch of the Blue Ridge Parkway, which was scenic to be sure, but very long. Certainly, the Appalachian mountain range isn’t as dramatic as, say, Big Sur, but the charm and the beauty are there all the same. It is America’s Favorite Drive, after all.

I didn’t take many good pictures — I never do — but here’s some that I like.

The Great California Road Trip

In late September, we drove from LA to San Francisco via the California 1. The 1 is a National Scenic Byway that was built along the coast of the great state of California, and as far as scenic routes go, this one might take the cake. From Santa Monica to the Big Sur cliffs to the Bay, we drove this two-lane route for the better part of four total days. We camped in a Big Sur Cabin, slept in an empty flat two blocks south of The Mission and stopped in Monterrey, before sauntering back to Echo Park.

After living in the harsh, dead and brown LA landscape, this trip was a much-needed reminder that we lived in the most naturally diverse state in the US. It was late September and I think we needed to remember what autumn felt like. I fell in love with California after this trip, and I hope to call it my home again at some point in the future.

The Great American Road Trip, Pt. 1

I drove to Los Angeles with my girlfriend a week after I graduated college to take a job with a public broadcast show. We drove from my house in Cincinnati to Salt Lake City to LA in three days. Looking back, I’m happy that I never allowed myself to revel in the highs and lows of graduation. I forced myself to keep moving and never to settle for something that doesn’t make me happy. I ended up quitting my job after two months and another two months later, I was on the road once again, heading to the East Coast.

I’m going to be cataloging the last four months here for a number of reasons – nostalgia and updating friends – but mostly to organize my life. I’ve been settled in Washington, DC for a month and I’m still living out of a briefcase.

Here are my favorite pictures from the trip out West in June. We listened to a lot of Lucero on this drive and I remember the trip fondly.
